Below are details of different types of ladders so that you are able to choose the right one for you.

Step Ladders

One of the most useful types of ladders you can have around your home is a step ladder. They can be used indoor and outdoors and are generally lightweight so anyone can carry them around. Because they are an A frame they tend to be very sturdy and reliable. You can buy step ladders with or without a platform.

Step Stools

Another very useful type of ladder is a step stool that can be used in your kitchen to reach the top of your cabinets, changing light bulbs or other general household activities. What’s great about them is that they can be folded and conveniently stored. Step stools are generally manufactured in lightweight aluminium and are very versatile.

Extension ladders

The most common type of ladder is an extension ladder which is ideal for all your DIY jobs and general household activities such as window cleaning, maintenance and repairs. Most extension ladders are made of hard wearing aluminium and come in two or three sections in a variety of sizes. Make sure you buy ones with non-slip feet riveted feet for extra safety. If you are buying for home use then a light-weight extension ladder is ideal with a maximum load of around 125kg. However, for professional or industrial use, you need to make sure that the extension ladder can carry a heavier load of 150-175kg.

Telescopic ladders

If you require a conventional ladder that is lightweight, sturdy and easy to store then a telescopic ladder is ideal. These popular ladders fold down to about 3 ft and then can extend to different heights. They can be used for home or professional use.

Combination Ladder

If you only need to use your ladders for home use, then a lightweight metal combination ladder is perfect. Not only do they fold away for easy storage in your garage, shed or cupboard, they can transform into whatever for you require. These types of ladders are so versatile that you can use them as a step ladder, a conventional ladder and a work platform.  Features usually include safety joints to safely lock or release the ladders as well as stabilizer bars to give steady and safe ground contact.

Also known as multi-purpose or universal ladders, these types of ladders are ideal for professional or industrial use as they are hard wearing. For the professional, a combination ladder can be used for a variety of jobs and is easily stored at the end of the day.

Loft Ladders

Converting your loft into a useable space is a great way to add value to your home as well as giving you an extra room to use for storage, a playroom or office. Since many homes simply don’t allow for a permanent staircase, a loft ladder is ideal because it takes up no floor space. You can buy loft ladders in aluminium or in different types of wood for a more stylish look. There are various types of loft ladders ranging from sliding, folding and concertina. The type of space you have available will determine the type of loft ladder you require.

Platform Ladders

Platform ladders are an invaluable tool for any professional trades person since they provide a stable and secure working platform on which to work. They are usually lightweight, easily stored and come in different working heights.

Scaffolding Platform Towers

Scaffolding platform towers can be used for home and professional use.  These type ladders are ideal for reaching working heights of up to 10m. Some even have a foldable base unit so that it can be stored easily and conveniently. If you do a lot of DIY, then a scaffold platform can offer more stability and security than regular ladders.

Roof Ladders

A roof access ladder is simply a must for any roofing or roof professional. These ladders are different from normal ladders in that they have a heavy duty roof hook to secure the ladder over the top of the roof. They also have non slip pads and other essential safety features. Roof ladders are available in a single section or extending format.

Conservatory Ladders

Conservatories add space and light to your home, but quite often the build up of dirt outside of the conservatory goes unnoticed. It is very difficult to clean a conservatory and the dirt especially on the roof can affect the sunlight coming through. Conservatory ladders are again different from normal ladders in that they can be laid across the roof of any conservatory without affecting the structure or the roof. These types of ladders are suitable for home and professional use.

Fixed Access Ladders

Meant for industrial use, fixed access ladders provide easy and safe access to roofs, mezzanine floors, loading docks, underground chambers and tanks, and loading docks. Whatever type of fixed access ladder you decide on make sure you choose one made of corrosion resistant aluminium which is extremely hardwearing and long lasting.

Industrial Rolling Ladders

Rolling ladders are ideal for use in a warehouse, stockroom or maintenance area since they can be moved around easily. Industrial rolling ladders are meant for heavy use and usually have a 350lb capacity, slip resistant steps and spring loaded casters.

As you can see there are many types of access ladders available. Whichever access ladder you choose, make sure that it is certified to British Standards if you are in the UK or ANSI standards if you are in the US.
